PM’s Office declares Paks II deal classified
The Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office declared the Paks expansion contracts confidential documents, following Hungarian NGO Energiaklub's request that the contracts be made publicly available, Hungarian online daily hvg.hu reported today.
MVM Paks II Atomerőmű Fejlesztő Zrt., the company overseen by The Prime Minister’s Office and in charge of coordinating the expansion of Hungary’s sole nuclear plant Paks, signed contracts with Russian joint-stock company, Nizhny Novgorod Engineering Company Atomenergoproekt, on December 9.
Energiaklub queried the contracts requesting that they be made publicly available on December 16 and received an answer from the Prime Minister’s Office that the contracts are classified as “secret”, and in line with the current laws and regulations they might remain classified for up to 30 years. Energiaklub is initiating proceedings at the Hungarian National Authority for data protection and freedom of information in connection with the issue.
